What should I expect during the assessment process?
Our assessment process may look a little different for everyone, but it generally falls into three phases: Intake, Testing, and Results.
- Intake: We start with an interview to gather information about current concerns, history, and goals for the evaluation. The intake appointment can be hosted virtually or in-office.
- Testing: We then proceed to schedule an in-office date to administer specific standardized assessments to the patient and some parent/guardian questionnaires. This appointment can range from 1-6 hours in length, with breaks offered. For some cases/ages, we may break up the testing into multiple appointments.
- Results Follow-up: Our last phase is to discuss the results and findings from the evaluation. Our psychologists will also provide recommendations for next steps and referrals as needed. This appointment is hosted virtually and usually takes an hour.
How do I prepare for services?
We want patients to feel comfortable and positive during their assessment experience. We encourage maintaining the patient’s normal routine and needs on the day of testing. This includes taking medication as prescribed by your medical provider, being well rested, eating a balanced meal, and being in good health. We highly recommend rescheduling the testing appointment if the patient is sick as it may affect the patient’s behavior and give inaccurate results.
What should I expect during the counseling?
In your first session, we will discuss your reasons for seeking counseling, your history, and what you hope to achieve. This is a time for you to share your concerns, and for us to gather information to understand your situation and determine how we can work together toward your goals.
How long does counseling take?
The length of counseling services varies depending on the concerns we’re addressing. Some people feel they’ve accomplished their goals after a few sessions, while others may benefit from more sessions. We reassess your progress regularly to determine the most effective course of action.
Is what I say in counseling confidential?
Yes, confidentiality is a critical part of services. Anything you share in sessions will remain private, with a few exceptions. For example, if there is a risk of harm to yourself or others, or if there are legal requirements, we may need to break confidentiality.
What if I don’t feel comfortable or don’t ‘click’ with the provider I see?
It's important that you feel comfortable with your provider. If at any point you feel that it’s not a good match, please let us know. We can discuss your concerns or refer you to another professional who may better suit your needs.
What is the difference between counseling and therapy? The terms are often used interchangeably but at Espree, we provide counseling services true to this definition. Counseling generally refers to shorter-term interventions that focus on specific issues or goals. Therapy is often more in-depth and can address long-term emotional, behavioral, or psychological challenges. For clients interested in longer-term therapy please visit our resource guide.
How do I know if counseling is working?
Progress is different for everyone. It’s often measured by improvements in how you feel, how you handle difficult situations, or changes in your thoughts and behaviors. We will regularly check in about your progress and goals.
